Ignacio Cabria García: (2002): Ovnis y ciencias humanas Un estudio temático de 50 años de bibliografía. [UFOs and Human Sciences] [A thematic study about 50 years of bibliography] Biblioteca Camille Flammarion Fundación Anomalía (Santander) 307 pages ISBN: 84-607-6545-8. |
UFOs are a human phenomenon, because we only know them from human testimonies about strange observations. How reliable is perception? Are witnesses credible people? Some psychologists and psychiatrists have tried to answer these questions. But ufo reports appear according to the widespread beliefs about alien visitations, specially nowadays, when the extraterrestrial iconography permeates every aspect of the popular culture.
Is the UFO phenomenon socially generated according to our cultural expectations? Are extraterrestrials a modern myth? Sociologists and anthropologists have tried to explain these and other questions since those blessed saucers appeared back in 1947.
Ignacio Cabria Garcia –Bachelor in Cultural Anthropology by Barcelona University and master in international cooperation by Madrid University- works in the Spanish Foreign Office. In his precedent book, Entre ufólogos, creyentes y contactados. Una historia social de los ovnis en España (Among ufologists, believers and contactees. A social history of UFOs in Spain)(1993) he showed his expertise. In this his second book, Cabria makes a systematic and chronological review of everything the human sciences have done to learn what is and how the UFO phenomena is created, as well as to understand its meaning for the modern culture. If the reader is interested in the UFO phenomenon and/or in the human sciences applied to the study of the anomalies, the new beliefs and the popular culture, this works is not just essential but compulsory.
